A COMPARISON OF PATTERNS CREATED FROM CNC MILLING MACHINE AND 3D PRINTING MACHINE

Previously, most of the jewelry designers follow the manual methods, workers with high skills will create delicate samples. In addition, as a result of lastingly created patterns,  their costs are high led to the production costs.

Today, with the strong development of the information technology and the digital, we have modern machinery combined with advanced technology to support in creating new products. Therefore, the time is shortened up, reduced input costs, and patterns created unique, with the enormous difficulty, which are suitable for mass production. Today, prototyping machines are very diverse and many categories so as to meet the most strict requirements in production. However, having two of prototyping technologies based on the utilization of raw materials to create patterns, which have advantages and disadvantages.

Two types of prototyping technologies are:

1. Rapid prototyping technology by means of subtractive method.

MDX-40 CNC milling machine.

Specifically, corresponding MDX-40 CNC milling machine by Roland – Japan.

Automated milling machines cut the materials following the subtracted pattern to create the shape of the requiring products. Input materials usually are wax round or square shape bar.

2. Rapid prototyping technology by means of additive method : there are many different additive methods.

Communist-style ink-jet 3D Printer. Specifically, Solid Cap T66 prototyping machine. It works like normal paper printer with input materials are the form of viscous liquid (like ink) printed gradual layers overlap following the additived/plus pattern, and incremental style to create complete 3D models following requiring design.

Communist-style curing each layer of material by laser light energy or UV ray (ultra violet – UV).  Specifically like Aureus Envisiontec prototyping machine or DWS 028 prototyping machine.

The materials of the viscous liquid form is contained in a tank with a transparent floor. Thus, one laser light or UV light is penetrated to the bottom of the tank will do for each class of material turns to solid gradually created patterns like 3D print form.

COMPARISONS JEWELRY PATTERNS CREATED FROM CNC MILLING MACHINE AND 3D PRINTING MACHINE

1. GOOD POINTS:

CNC milling machine.                               Aureus Envisiontec machine.

FORM  IN CNC MILLING MACHINE MODEL IN 3D PRINT MACHINE
Materials created samples which are rich diversity such as: wax, wood, plastic, non-ferrous metals such as aluminum …
The patterns are often accurate, sophisticated, with a high resolution
Surface is smooth, no post-processing or less
Perfect with wax sample, casting wax pattern , plastic mold. Convenient for jewelery sample, dentistry such as wax model, rubber model, casting  model
Materials cost are considerable
Template created the fastest, saving time
Characteristics of sample consists of stable, reliable, and  relatively  high-resolution.
Consumption of materials are negligible

2. BAD POINTS:

FORM IN CNC MILLING MACHINE MODEL IN 3D PRINTING MACHINE
Materials created sample limited only polymers, or proprietary materials in machine.
Samples have relative accuracy
The quality of the sample surface is low because powder should be sprayed detailed surface roughness which is much more due to material particles. So, post-processing process needs to solve by sandpaper rubbing to surface is far smoother
Sample characteristics are not equal. They depend on the material available. As a result, it’s really difficult to predict durable consumption of abundantly created pattern of materials.
Materials cost is more expensive.

3. CONCLUSIONS:

1 – If you are interested in high productivity and in lower cost rather than the accuracy is not high and the surface quality of the samples is not good, you should choose 3D PRINTING MACHINE

2 – If you are interested in high accuracy and good surface quality rather than productivity and cost, you should select CNC MILLING MACHINE.
